Protect Yourself From Workplace Hazards – Even Those Less Recognizable Ones

One of the keys to a safe workplace is your ability to recognize workplace hazards.

Makes sense, right? If you don’t recognize the hazard, how can you protect yourself from it?

In most cases workplace hazards are pretty easy to recognize, such as:

  • The need to wear proper eye protection when you are cutting or grinding something
  • Not stepping on “This is Not a Step” on a step ladder
  • The need to maintain a clean work area to prevent slips, trips and falls
  • Fall hazards when you are on a roof

But what about those hazards that are not so easily recognized?

Hazards like:

  • Those associated with wearing a respirator
  • Those created when you are performing a task for the first time
  • Hidden atmospheric hazards within a confined space
  • Those created by other trades you may be working around

So, how do you protect yourself from workplace hazards – even those less recognizable ones?

Follow these 3 steps and you’ll be well on your way to a safe workday.

  • 1. Never perform any work without first understanding all recognizable hazards associated with completing it.
  • 2. Always make sure you have received the required safety training and have the proper tools to get the job done safely.
  • 3. When working around other trades, always be aware of your surroundings. If you believe you are being exposed to a potential hazard, stop work and bring it to the attention of your supervisor so that it can properly addressed.

Hazard recognition is key to your safety and those working with you. Always take the time to understand how to protect yourself from workplace hazards before you start work.
