You Must Make Time!
A lot of our clients tell us it’s tough to find time to provide their employees with safety training and our answer is always the same. You Must Make Time!
Here are a few ideas to get safety training in whether you have 10 minutes or a day available.
Training can take the form of safety meetings, online training, hands-on demonstration, formal classroom instruction, or informal question and answer periods allowing you the opportunity to effectively communicate your safety policies and procedures.
Let’s take a quick look at a few of these options.
Safety Meetings (5 to 10 Minutes)
The key is to find an effective time for a job site safety meeting. If possible, safety meetings, in addition to all training and instruction, should be interactive allowing for the give and take of ideas. Remember to keep the meeting on topic to prevent falling into a meaningless rap session about everything except safety.
Online Training (15 Minutes to Hours)
The great thing about online training is that you can provide it 24/7 when it’s convenient for both the employee and employer. It can be taken from a computer, tablet and even a smart phone.
The information that is provided to employees is consistent and, in most cases, a quiz or test is completed at the end, ensuring documentation of the training.
Quick note – just wanted to let you know that we are currently providing for a limited time Pandemic Preparedness w/COVID-19 training through our online training for Free.No credit card required and no obligation to purchase any additional training or services. Just sign your company up for the online training and train one or all your employees for free.
Moving on . . .
Formal Classroom Instruction (1 Hour to Days)
Sometimes it takes more than a safety meeting or answering questions on an informal basis to ensure your employees are trained properly. Formal training is very structured and covers a topic in depth. Formal training can be given by you, your competent persons, or as is often the case, outside trainers.
Hands-On Demonstrations (15 Minutes to Hours)
Setting up scaffolds, tying off ladders, demonstrating forklift skills, using a GFCI, filling out a checklist, stacking materials, using fire extinguishers, performing fit test, cleaning equipment . . . this list can go on and only you know what is appropriate for your employees. However, hands-on demonstrations of various job procedures do make a lasting impression and are an effective teaching tool.
And don’t forget to Document, Document, Document!
All safety training, regardless of type, enhances your overall safety effort and helps protect your employees from hazards in the workplace.
Documenting every aspect of your safety training, regardless of type, helps protect you from OSHA citations. Training is a clear demonstration of employer commitment to safety. Documentation, at a minimum, should include the:
- safety topic
- date
- name of each attendee
- name of the instructor [formal training should include the qualification of the
instructor]
If you want to protect your most valuable assets . . . Your Employees, Company Reputation and Profits, you must make time for safety training.
